A perfect event for young children to learn about the fundamentals of reading and writing, as they learn to build there own story. Author Carole Boston Weatherford will be presenting the workshop and demonstrating the different parts of a book. Children will also learn how to create their own stores.

Michael Jackson approaches African American History through a fun and contemporary look. This exciting children’s workshop is designed to introduce African American history that is relevant and alive through the use of images, music, and phrases that today’s youth can relate to.

Dr. Liz Luse & Nancy McGruder lead this wonderful workshop on reading. How can parents help children who are struggling readers? What can parents do to raise children who read? How can parents become reading role models? Answers to these questions and reading strategies for children & adults who struggle to read are all a part of what makes this panel a must attend!

:: Bios ::
Nancy McGruder is an English/Language Arts consultant for Region X Education Service Center. She received her B.S. in elementary education from Salve Regina University and her M.S. in Educational Leadership from Troy State University. Nancy has been an education for over 12 years teaching abroad in South Korea and Germany as well as in the United States. When asked why she went into education, Nancy answered “I believe this is what God has called me to do.”

Poetry Reading Poetry Workshop: Rhyme and Reason Poetically Speaking

New to the world of poetry? Then this workshop is for you! Come and receive a beginner’s introduction to poetry from. After learning the basics, LaGlynn will also discuss structure less poetry that is akin to the spoken word movement. You will not leave this workshop empty handed either! Throughout LaGlynn’s presentation participants will have the opportunity to write original pieces in each style and leave with a skeleton of his or her own manuscript!

Broken Heart Tile Teen Dating Violence: “Love Doesn't Hurt” Pt. 2

Ages: 13 yrs+
An overview and interactive discussion of violence in teen relationships based on Trek and Ferris’ relationship in Backseats and Bleachers: A High School Love Story, by Alexus Rhone. We’ll cover: How to identify violence in teen relationships; the signs of abuse Dating violence myths; Warning signs of perpetrators (abuser); How to address the situation if you or your friend are in an abusive relationship. This workshop is recommended for teens (14-18), college students, and parents of teens.

Ages: 12-18 yrs
Love will invite adolescents’ age twelve (12) to eighteen (18) to explore the concept of love in various types of relationships, such as friendships, familial and personal. Utilizing the author’s novels Ms. Thang and Urban Goddess, the workshop will focus on defining the meaning of love, examining its many forms, and exploring the current trends and patterns in adolescent behavior. This workshop will also provide valuable insight on the fundamentals healthy relationship building and incorporating behavior modification methods to contribute to the success of these relationships.

A crowd of people The Art of the People

Ages: 5-14 yrs.
At “The Art of the People”, led by Aroid Neal, students will gain a sense of self, and become part of a rich ancestral tradition through the art of pottery. Plates, vases and bottles are used to create beautiful artworks adorned with cultural symbols, patterns and images that depict African and Mexican Heritage.
