T

ulisoma, Swahili for "we read", is a community-based literary festival promoting literacy and the arts in the South Dallas/Fair Park area. Founded in 2003, by District 7 - Dallas City Councilman Leo V. Chaney, Jr., the goal of Tulisoma is to create a dynamic event tailored to engage local families, avid readers, aspiring writers and visitors to the city. This year's 4th annual Tulisoma will be held at the African American Museum and the Womens Museum at Fair Park.

Tulisoma will highlight nationally acclaimed authors, such as author and trailblazer Alice Randall, best selling author and screenwriter Omar Tyree, mystery writer and political activist Walter Mosley, recipient of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award Kadir Nelson, young adult author Alexus Rhone, and one of the most influential leaders of our day, writer Rebecca Walker. In addition, Tulisoma will feature works by regional authors, technical and creative-writing workshops, panel discussions, as well as celebrity readers, anchor Randy McIlwain (NBC Channel 5), anchor Baron James (KDFA Fox 4), Ronald McDonald, radio personalities Skip Murphy and Sam Putney (K104.5 fm) and a host of others. Tulisoma offers engaging programs for all ages, and with literacy being an important initiative for Dallas, we seek to inspire our youth with a love of reading and learning.

Some of this year’s Special Events will include Breakfast with Alice Randall, Old Mill Restaurant; Pork Chops & Politics with Walter Mosley, South Dallas Café; Coffee & Conversation with Omar Tyree, St. Martin’s Place; Gospel Brunch, where the “pen meets praise”, African American Museum; and Book Talk with Rebecca Walker, also at the African American History Museum. There will be several workshops and panel discussions, including “I Can’t Afford To Marry You”.  Acclaimed illustrator of children books, Kadir Nelson will be presenting two workshops, one for elementary school age kids and the other for teens. Please consult the Event Schedule for this and more exciting programs.

We hope you will join us for this wonderful event.

Three of the Special Events -- including Pork Chops & Politics, Coffee & Conversation and the Gospel Brunch -- will require tickets, available online from TicketWeb. The other workshops also require registration in advance, using this form.
