Friday & Saturday, August 19-20, 2005

T

ulisoma, Swahili for "we read", is a community-based literary festival promoting literacy and the arts in the South Dallas/Fair Park area. Founded in 2003, by District 7 - Dallas City Councilman Leo V. Chaney, Jr., the goal of Tulisoma is to create a dynamic event tailored to engage local families, avid readers, aspiring writers and visitors to the city. This year's 3rd annual Tulisoma will be held Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, 2005 and will be held at the African American Museum and the Hall of State at Fair Park.

Tulisoma will highlight nationally acclaimed authors, such as poet and activist Nikki Giovanni, best selling author and playwright Eric Jerome Dickey, leader and scholar Dr. Ronald W. Walters, and Floyd Cooper recipient of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award. In addition, Tulisoma will feature works by regional authors, technical and creative-writing workshops, panel discussions, as well as celebrity readers, such as anchor Debbie Denmon (WFAA-Channel 8), anchor Ramona Logan (NBC Channel 5), anchor Baron James (KDFA Fox 4), and a host of others. Tulisoma offers engaging programs for all ages, and with literacy being an important initiative for Dallas, we seek to inspire our youth with a love of reading and learning.

Some of this year’s Special Events will include Breakfast with Nikki, Old Mill Restaurant; Pork Chops & Politics with Dr. Ronald Walters, South Dallas Café;  Coffee & Conversation with Eric Jerome Dickey, Crayton’s Restaurant. Panel discussions will include: Why God Made Writers, How to Start a Successful Book Club, and From Self Published to Mainstream. Acclaimed illustrator of children books Floyd Cooper will be presenting two workshops, one for elementary school age kids and the other for teens. Please consult the Event Schedule for this and more exciting programs.

We hope you will join us for this wonderful event.
